Recently Theresa May became the prime minister of the United Kingdom and expectations are high with regards to Hilary Clinton likely becoming the next president of the United States of America.
In Nigeria, the women are given opportunities to take up political positions but they are looking forward to more responsibilities like becoming the governors and even the president of the country. The following is a review of women who may likely rule this country if the opportunity comes.
Dr. Mrs. Sarah Nazwa Jibril
Dr. (Mrs.) Jibril was born on the 6th of March 1946. She hails from Kwara state. She started her political career at the local government level. Dr. Jibril was one time commissioner of youth, sports and culture. She was also a special adviser to the former president Goodluck Jonathan. Dr. Mrs. Sarah Jibril happens to be the first woman to run for presidential election in Nigeria under the platform of SDP in 1993.
Senator Aisha Al-hassan
Senator Aisha Al-hassan was born on the 16th of September, 1959. She was formerly a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) before decamping to the All Progressives Party (APC). She contested in the governorship election of Taraba state in 2015 and was declared winner by the court. She is the first elected female senator from Taraba state. Currently she is the Minster of Women Affairs.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu
Senator Oluremi Tinubu was born on the 21st of September, 1960. She is the wife of the former executive governor of Lagos state and Leader of the All Progressives Party (APC) Chief Ahmed Bola Tinubu. She started her political career as a senator representing Lagos state under the All Progressives Party platform and continues to leverage on the influence of her husband in the political cycles. Who knows she may end up giving the office of presidency a shot in the future.
Dr. Mrs. Oby (Obiageli) Ezekwesili
Dr. Oby Ezekwesili was born on the 28th of April, 1963 and hails from Anambra state. Although, Dr. Oby has not contested for any political position in Nigeria yet, but she has worked for the Nigerian government as a minister of solid minerals and also of education with the past. She is well known within the development policy circles.She has also worked as the Vice President of World Bank-African division. Dr. Oby is an activist who continues to champion the “Bring Back Our Girls Campaign”.
There are so many other women in Nigeria that are doing great in their chosen career. You can mention any of them whom you feel is capable of ruling this great country- Nigeria.
